LGS-EDGE (LGS-Emory Diversifying Graduate Education) will host its 7th Annual Learning about Laney: Preview Visitation of Emory University, Laney Graduate School on Monday, September 29, 2025. LGS invites promising, highly qualified, prospective LGS scholars from diverse backgrounds and experiences to explore 40+ LGS degree programs offered at Emory University. 

This fully funded visit is designed to familiarize potential LGS scholars with our graduate programs, faculty, staff, and current scholars while providing insight into the life of an LGS scholar. All participants will receive round-trip travel to Emory, lodging, and an application fee waiver for the Laney Graduate School. 

Participants will arrive in Atlanta, GA, on Sunday, September 28, 2025, and the visit will be convened with an evening welcome activity. Monday, September 29, 2025, will be a full-day in-person campus visit. Participants will depart on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. 

Program Features

  • Meet Emory faculty and current graduate scholars.
  • Tour the campus and see the interdisciplinary resources and facilities.
  • Learn more about the graduate school admissions process.
  • Participate in Sessions focused on financial resources, professional development, and community and belonging.

The program is designed to be welcoming to scholars from a broad range of backgrounds, offering programming that introduces the opportunities and resources available through Laney Graduate School and the greater Emory community. All applicants who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply.

Applicants are sought from a wide pool, representing a variety of identities, perspectives, and experiences—including gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic background, religion, and nationality. The program also prioritizes accessibility, ensuring that scholars with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit major life activities are supported and able to fully participate.

Those who are first-generation U.S. citizens (whose parents were not born in the U.S.) and individuals who are the first in their families to attend college are also encouraged to apply.

All applicants who meet the eligibility criteria 1-6 listed below are welcome to apply. 

1A. Demonstrate a serious commitment to obtaining a doctoral degree from a Laney Graduate School PhD program. Interest could be in any of our PhD programs within the following broad divisions: natural sciences, biomedical sciences, quantitative sciences, public health, social sciences, humanities, business, or nursing OR 1B. Demonstrate a serious interest in applying to one of the following Master’s programs: Bioethics, Biomedical Innovation & Development, Computer Sciences and Informatics, Development Practice, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Quantitative Theory & Methods.    

2. All applicants must graduate (no more than 5 years and cannot hold a terminal degree) or be in their senior/final year of their undergraduate degree.

3. All applicants must graduate no later than Summer 2026 and anticipate enrollment in graduate school in Fall 2026.

4. Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients. Undocumented scholars are welcome to apply.

5. Prior research/training experience in one’s desired field is required.

6. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

The strongest applications for this visitation program will have a clear sense of how and why each specific program is a good fit for their intended work. Learning about Laney is intended to help you gain a clearer picture of this, but as you prepare your application, we suggest looking carefully at our degree programs and faculty and indicating which you are most interested in. To that end, the application limits you to pick ONE graduate program of interest. 

Interdisciplinary work is encouraged at Emory University, but determining which academic program offers the primary methodological and research foci that best suit your interests will strengthen your application. In addition, it will allow LGS-EDGE to match you with the appropriate faculty and current scholars during your visit. 1st week of September: Selected applicants must accept or deny offers 

Sunday, September 28 – Tuesday, September 30: 2025 Learning about Laney Preview Visitation 

  • A statement describing your current academic/professional goals as they relate to your interest in graduate study. This statement should specifically mention the programs of study at Emory in which you are interested, as well as faculty members whose work is of particular interest to you. (Max 500 words) 
  • A current CV/Resume 
  • An unofficial copy of your most recent transcript
